Drones have provided high-resolution, up-to-date imagery that was essential to the development of exposure maps and for modeling flood risks in Dar es Salaam. The success of this project – an ouput of ongoing collaborative efforts between the World Bank and GFDRR, the Tanzanian Government, the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team, and the Swiss based non-profit organization, Drone Adventures – has led to further applications and to government funding for infrastructure improvements in vulnerable areas of Tanzania identified during the engagement. This case study, written by the Swiss Foundation for Mine Action (FSD), outlines the project’s drone-driven data collection process, applications of its outputs, and its eventual and potential influences on the city of Dar es Salam.
